Lynette's Review: "Harvest of Gold"

Harvest of Gold continues the story of Darius and Sarah that began in Harvest of Rubies. Set 2,500 years ago in Persia and Jerusalem, this work of historical fiction takes place during the rebuilding of Jerusalem’s walls in the time of Nehemiah. Sarah, an intelligent Jewish scribe, is cousin to Nehemiah, governor of Persian Judea. She is married to Darius, a Persian aristocrat. Darius’ mother is an Israelite, but he remains skeptical that Sarah is the right choice for him.

Darius, with the help of Sarah, has uncovered a plot to assassinate King Artaxerxes. He is sent by the king to Jerusalem undercover to see if he can discover the originator of the plot. Their marriage begins to unravel on their journey as they face danger and struggle with treachery, opposition, and the constraints of duty and faith. Sarah is a loveable heroine who always says exactly what she thinks. Darius is handsome, passionate, and physically strong. This well-researched story is filled with action and intrigue. Pain and struggles bring characters to life and transport readers to Jerusalem without ever leaving home. Author’s notes and a readers’ guide further explaining historical details are included at the end of the novel.

Harvest of Gold was nominated for the 2014 Christy Award.
