Katie's Review: "Down South Paleo"

With the holidays around the corner, it can be difficult to maintain a healthy weight. In the South, we have an overabundance of good food, especially around this time of year. How can you say no to green bean casserole, gumbo, and bread pudding? With Jennifer Robins’ Down South Paleo, you can worry less about your waistline, and more about the big game.

In her book, Robins shares several delectable Southern recipes. There are breakfast and dinner recipes, as well as side items, h’orderves, desserts, and drink recipes. Robins has managed to create delicious recipes that are not only free of processed junk (refined sugar, preservatives, trans-fat, etc.), but also free of top allergens, such as grain, dairy, nut, egg, soy, and nightshade. Many Southerners will attest that Robins has taken “the good stuff” out of Southern cooking. This could not be further from the truth. Robins masters the use of alternative floors and merely substitutes refined foods for healthful foods. She takes classic favorites, like gumbo (which uses refined flour), and uses grain and soy free flours (water chestnut, almond, and tapioca flours) to create healthful spins on classic dishes.

Jennifer Robins’ Down South Paleo is an excellent book for those interested in maintaining healthy eating styles. You won’t be sacrificing flavor for health with Robins’ recipes. She captures the essence of Southern cooking and revamps it to meet modern lifestyles. Readers can still enjoy the rich Southern comfort foods without sacrificing taste. This book is aesthetically pleasing as well; nearly every recipe is accompanied by a picture.
