Katie Recommends: The Doctor Who Comics

When the Doctor Who Christmas special feels like it’s 4 billion years away, what can a Whovian do? Unfortunately, most of us don’t have access to the TARDIS (time and relative dimension in space). Therefore, one must journey over to the HOOPLA digital library. In HOOPLA, there is a great selection of Doctor Who Comic books. As a fan of the 10th Doctor, played by David Tennant, I was immediately drawn to the cover art of Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor series by Nick Abadzis, Elena Casagrande, and Arianna Florian.

Doctor Who: Revolutions of Terror is the first part in the Tenth Doctor comic series. The Doctor is a 900 year old Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey. He’s the last of his kind; all other Time Lords were destroyed in the Time Wars. The Doctor travels through space and time, going on adventures and usually saving planets and civilizations from demise. He is never cruel or cowardly, but very compassionate and extremely brilliant. He usually has a companion or two for his intergalactic trips.

Doctor Who: The Revolutions of Terror picks up right after the Doctor parted ways with his former companion, Donna Noble. The Doctor swore he would not pick up any more new companions; people tend to get hurt or killed when they are around the time traveling alien. While visiting modern day Brooklyn, New York, the Doctor meets Gabriella “Gabby” Gonzales. Gabby dreams of something more than Sunset Park and running her father’s laundromat. Little does she know she is in for the adventure of a lifetime when a strange man with “a machine that goes ‘ding’ when there’s stuff” saves her from a monstrous beast on the subway. Together, Gabby and the Doctor must travel through space and time to discover why Sunset Park is being overrun by an invisible horror.

The first installment of Doctor Who: Revolutions of Terror does not disappoint. I felt like I was right alongside the Doctor and Gabby, trying to figure out the mysterious evil faces and psychic manipulations. Fans old and new of Doctor Who will be delighted by a set of all new adventures with their favorite Doctor.
