Laura's Pick: Lock Every Door by Riley Sager

The same day that Jules loses her job, she comes home to find her boyfriend in bed with another woman. Now she is living on her best friend’s couch trying to put her life back together. She finds a job opportunity listed on Craigslist: Apartment Sitter Wanted. The pay is amazing and it is at the upscale and historical Bartholomew building. After a rather strange interview Jules is offered the position but she has to agree to the rules: do not disturb the other residents, no guests – none! , and you must spend every night in the apartment. Jules accepts the job immediately, but her friend isn’t convinced this is a good opportunity. Sometimes when things seem too good to be true, it is. Jules doesn’t care about the creepy history, she needs the money. Then she starts hearing noises and her new friend, Ingrid, leaves in the middle of the night and no one knows where she went. While searching for her friend, Jules starts to uncover the mysteries of the Bartholomew Building and its rather peculiar residents. It doesn’t take long before she realizes there is more going on than just what you see on the surface.

Lock Every Door is a suspenseful thriller from the first page. There is such a prevalent sense of danger from the first minute Jules arrives at the Bartholomew. The reader knows it’s too good to be true, and that she shouldn’t be so trusting of everyone she meets, but as the reader you’re helpless to shake some sense into her. The narration shifts between the present and Jules’ arrival a few days earlier but it is very easy to follow. I was completely taken by surprise at the ending and that doesn’t happen often. If you love an on-the-edge of your seat mystery, this is the book for you. It leans toward the gothic side which makes it even more suspenseful. I highly recommend!
