Lynette's Pick: Love and Other Mistakes by Jessica Kate

Natalie Groves is ditched by her fiancée ten days before the wedding with no explanation. Then she drops out of college and begins a succession of “brain numbing” jobs to make ends meet. Soon after this, her father is diagnosed with cancer, and Natalie is doing all she can to care for both of her aging parents.

Fast forward several years and Jeremy, the ex-fiancée, moves back to town with a six-month-old son he is raising as a single parent. In a couple of days, Natalie and Jeremy are reunited at the scene of an accident, and against her better judgment, she accepts a job as nanny to baby Oliver. Meantime, Natalie receives a shot at a dream-job internship and Jeremy helps her go for it.

Jeremy puts off reuniting with his police officer dad. Ever since Jeremy’s mom died, he cannot measure up to his dad’s expectations. Surprising the old man with an illegitimate son does nothing to move their relationship forward. Natalie steps in and attempts to open the eyes of both men to what really matters.

Then there is Jeremy’s artist niece, Lili, who walked in on her father kissing her art teacher. Lili tries to keep her dad’s secret from her mom because she does not want to make things worse, but her father’s betrayal is too much for her. She moves in at Uncle Jeremy’s while her parents try to work on their marriage.

This story definitely illustrates the complications of life with a dash of humor mixed into the pain. There is a lot going on in this clean soap opera providing a fast-moving escape from reality. Like in real life, endings are somewhat happy, somewhat not. Four stars for a heartfelt debut novel.

Rating: **** Stars (I really liked it!)
