Stuck in some sort of time loop that forces her to live through the worst Valentine's Day EVER over and over again, Emilie Hornby wonders what will happen when the universe stops doling out do-overs when something good starts to come out of her nightmare.
Emilie Hornby is having the worst Valentine's Day ... over and over again. Stuck in some kind of time loop, February 14 is playing on repeat, and Emilie is having to relive the same humiliating events - wrecking her Astro Van, catching her boyfriend kissing his ex, and being rejected for a desirable internship - day after day after day. But there's one part of this wretched, repeating Valentine's Day that's not so bad - Emilie is getting to know her chemistry lab partner Nick a little bit better. As she spends one Valentine's Day after another with the brooding Nick, she finds herself inexplicably drawn to him, but how can she build a future with a guy when she can't even hold onto the present?
Lynn Painter's The Do-Over is the perfect YA read for Valentine's Day! This timeloop novel was a lot of fun, and I enjoyed seeing how Emilie slightly modified each of her February 14s in an attempt to find the right combination that will help her escape the torture of living Valentines Day on repeat.
Emilie is smart and snarky, and while very much a people pleaser at the start of this book, she grows into her own as she is given the opportunity to try out different paths without consequences. She is a relatable, generally grounded main character who does not have all of the answers, which I think is important representation in a novel for teens.
This funny book is a delightful read for Valentine's Day!
