Brooke's Pick: The Other Mrs. Miller by Allison Dickson

A lonely suburban housewife finds her life entangled with that of her picture-perfect new neighbors across the street at the same time she becomes convinced that someone is watching her.

If you loved The Last Mrs. Parrish and The Woman In the Window, Allison Dickson's new novel, The Other Mrs. Miller, needs to go on your TBR list! In this domestic thriller, the only child of a very wealthy man has shut herself in and given up on life as she knew it after her father's death and the scandal that came to light after his passing. Once vibrant and full of life, Phoebe Miller now spends her days in sweats, drinking wine, and avoiding her husband. Yes, her marriage is falling apart too. But unbeknownst to Phoebe, her life is about to receive a shake-up because there's a mysterious blue car lurking around outside her home, and a strange family that has just moved in across the street. Both parties are about to enter Phoebe's woefully stagnant life and irrevocably alter her world.

Dickson's The Other Mrs. Miller wastes no time throwing readers right into the middle of the train wreck that is Phoebe Miller's life, ensconcing them in her closeted world. Keeping the setting simple - after all, Phoebe is a shut-in who doesn't leave her home - Dickson drives home the relationships in this novel. At its focus are Phoebe's interest and relations with her therapist husband, who desperately wants a child that Phoebe is hellbent on not giving him, the new neighbors, who aren't quite what they seem, and the ominous person in the blue car, who provides snippets of insight and narration throughout the book. All of the parties work together to drive this story home to an unexpected twist mid-novel that is pulse-pounding and changes everything.

Readers of women's suspense fiction will have no trouble diving right into the plot and characters of The Other Mrs. Miller. Dickson writes in a way that is straightforward, yet propulsive, always keeping the story moving and developing the characters at the same time. Before you know it, you will be turning the last page of this suspenseful novel, in which Dickson leaves a mystery unsolved until the very end. Filled with despicable characters who you will love to hate, The Other Mrs. Miller showcases deception and manipulation in all its forms, and highlights the insidious dangers of power and privilege.
