In the future of Micaiah Johnson’s The Space Between Worlds, the secret of multiverse travel has been discovered, but there’s a catch. Traveling to a universe where your counterpart is still alive will break your body so badly that every known case has equaled a very messy death. The most valuable traversers are people who have survived lives in which small variations have killed hundreds of their counterparts, people like Cara, born to a drug-addicted mother and raised in the brutality of Ashtown. For years Cara has worked for the Eldridge Institute, gathering data from across the multiverse and hoping to stay employed long enough to earn citizenship in Wiley City while flirting with her handler Dell, a city girl who feels impossible to attain. When one of Cara’s eight remaining counterparts is reported dead under mysterious circumstances, Cara’s first trip to her world will lead her to secrets that will ripple across the multiverse. Will Cara be smart enough and ruthless enough to cheat death again?
Cara is an engaging heroine through which to view this intriguingly-built world, and Johnson juggles discussions of crossing class divides and crossing the borders of the multiverse with skill. With intricate plotting spiked with plenty of action, this novel runs along at a pace that makes it hard to look away. The Space Between Worlds is a great read for sci-fi fans who love the genre for its ability to get the mind working as much as it can to get the blood pumping.
