Crystal's Pick: Prayers for Sale by Sandra Dallas

After reading The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah, I wanted to read another depression-era book. My search led me to Prayers for Sale by Sandra Dallas. This was a fantastic book about friendship and a tight-knit community. The story is set in 1936 in Middle Swan, Colorado, which is a mining town high in the mountains. Eighty-six year old widow, Hennie Comfort, loves her life in Middle Swan, but her daughter, Mae, is pestering her to move in with her because she worries about her mother living alone especially with Colorado’s long, harsh winters. Seventeen year old Nit and her husband have just moved to Middle Swan. The “Prayers For Sale” sign in Hennie’s front yard is the conversation piece that begins a wonderful relationship between Hennie and Nit. Hennie helps Nit settle into the life of a mountain woman married to a gold miner. They share their love of storytelling and quilting. At 86 years old, Hennie has many, many, many stories to tell, and at 17 years old, Nit is in need of wisdom, advice, and nurturing. It’s as though their relationship was meant to be.

This was my first Sandra Dallas book. I enjoyed it so much that I read another, Westering Women. Her writing is so easy to follow, and her characters are very likeable. Prayers For Sale was a heartwarming, cozy read filled with secrets that kept me turning the pages.
