Heather's Pick: On the Corner of Chocolate Avenue by Tziporah Cohen

The story of sweet success behind the Hershey's Kiss! The invention of America's quintessential milk chocolate bar is brought to vivid, delicious life in this STEAM picture book biography perfect for fans of Mr. Ferris and His Wheel and Snowflake Bentley.

Are you a Hershey person? I sure am. If you ask me which brand of chocolate is my favorite, my answer is always Hershey. But did you know that a long time ago chocolate was only available to the rich? I had no idea until I read On the Corner of Chocolate Avenue: How Milton Hershey Brought Milk Chocolate to America by Tziporah Cohen. This wonderfully delicious biography is the story of how Milton Hershey created his chocolate empire.

As a child, Milton’s family was poor and he dreamed of having delicious chocolate to eat but the only ones sold were too expensive and only available to the rich. As Milton grew up he noticed how sweets made people and himself happy so he worked to build a career in which he could make these delectable treats available to everyone. He started out making caramels and eventually became known as the man who brought the first chocolate bar to America.

This wonderful picture book is attention-grabbing and full of interesting information. Steven Salerno’s illustrations complement the story so well. The colorfully detailed drawings draw you into the book and keep you wanting to turn the page. Same with the story. The book is filled with facts about Milton and his career, but they are masked in the easy-to-read style of this book. The last pages of the book include black and white photographs of Milton Hershey throughout his life, more resources to find out more information about Milton and chocolate, as well as a timeline of Milton’s life and career. Even though this is a children’s book, it is a great read for chocolate lovers of all ages.
