Kathy's Pick: Cradle of the Stars: KWKH & The Louisiana Hayride by Joey Kent

In 1907, William Erwin Antony, age 10, became the owner/operator of Shreveport’s first wireless broadcasting station. What followed was an adventure of discovery, ingenuity and innovation, culminating in a radio program with far-reaching influence for the music industry: the radio station KWKH and its “western” or “hillbilly” music program “The Louisiana Hayride.”

Kent presents the history of the radio station KWKH in Louisiana, accompanied by photographs and memorabilia of the times. Beginning in 1907 and continuing through 2003, he describes the people who influenced radio’s growth from a hobby to a commercial enterprise. Early KWKH broadcasts included Jimmie Davis singing “You Are My Sunshine,” a speech by Governor Huey Long, and western music singers and their “gangs.” The Louisiana Hayride aired for the first time nationwide on April 3, 1948, starting at 8:00 pm for 3 hours. The Shreveport Municipal Memorial Auditorium hosted the Hayride. Future programs showcased talents such as Hank Williams, Kitty Wells, Faron Young, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Merle Haggard, and the “Memphis Flash” - Elvis Presley. Newspaper ads, payslips, 45 rpm records, expense sheets, contracts, and letters add to the fascinating story of young performers just starting out in the music business.

This backstage look into the radio program which provided a start for so many successful performers is filled with interesting tidbits of information. Fast-paced, the narrative carries you along for the ride, while opening the doors to the past. Come join in on “The Louisiana Hayride.” It’s an adventure not to be missed.
