Kathy's Pick: The Weaving Explorer by Deborah Jarchow & Gwen W. Steege

The Weaving Explorer takes inspiration from the world of folk weaving traditions, adding a contemporary spin by introducing an unexpected range of materials and home decorating projects.

The process of weaving has been around for an extremely long time, and the variations in finished projects are limitless. This book focuses on differing techniques and presents a sample project for each type. Weaving on frames can be accomplished in circles to create a God’s Eye, Dorset Buttons, or even the wall hanging shown on the front cover of the book (an embroidery hoop was used as the frame). Squares or rectangles can be created by using a Pin-Loom, the warp and weft adjusted to the size desired. A simple picture frame (with no pins or nails) could even be used as a loom for weaving. Projects include a Patchwork Scarf, a Bias Washcloth, a Rag-Woven Stool, and Tapestries. But weaving can also be accomplished without using a loom. Frameless weaving projects include Wire Necklaces, Knotless Netting Bottles, Paper or Ribbon Baskets, and even a Lavender Wand (woven over stems of freshly cut lavender).

Besides explaining the different techniques, instructions are given for building your own equipment, such as a Frame Loom, Heddle Cradle, or a Band Lock. Spotlights on artists who use specific techniques, with their original designs shown, help illustrate the possibilities of each type of weaving. Materials used can range from scraps of yarn, fabric strips, wire, parachute cord, paper, and even ordinary twine. Clear step-by-step, illustrated directions ensure a successful completion. Works of art and handy household items can be made using the simple process of “over and under.”

The gorgeous illustrations are a perfect complement to the information in this book. Sidebars provide “Tips for Success” and design hints for creating your own projects. The authors’ artistry, imagination, and skill displayed in the finished woven creations are truly awe-inspiring.
