Van's Pick: The Art of Bob Mackie by Frank Vlastnik & Laura Ross

The first-ever, comprehensive and authorized showcase of legendary fashion designer Bob Mackie's fabulous life and work, featuring hundreds of photos and dozens of never-before-seen sketches from his personal collection.

Bob Mackie has designed costumes for some of America’s greatest entertainers. Cher, Tina Turner, Pink, Bette Midler, Beyonce, and Madonna are just a few of the stars who have worn his designs. He has worked for sixty years and his work has graced Broadway, television and cinema not to mention countless red carpet events. He has won Tony and Emmy awards and he has been nominated for the Oscar three times. He has also received a lifetime achievement award from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. A beautiful coffee table has just been published as a retrospective of his work and it is a worthy tribute to this prolific designer.

The book begins with sketches of some his most iconic designs and a forward by Carol Burnett and an afterword by Cher. It begins by detailing his humble beginnings in Southern California. One of his first sketches was for Marilyn Monroe’s iconic rhinestone dress that she wore for the 45th birthday celebration of John F. Kennedy. He would then design for the Judy Garland Show. There is an interesting chapter about Mackie’s collaborator and life partner of 50 years Gorgen Ray Aghahan, a gifted designer in his own right. Mackie’s work on the famous Carol Burnett Show is covered extensively since this gave him his first world wide exposure. His collaboration with Cher for her television show and many of her most well known red carpet outfits is also heavily examined. Few realize he is responsible for Cher’s most famous outfit that she wore for the Academy Awards in 1986 consisting of a black webbed bikini dress and a mohawk headpiece.

The book has a many colorful illustrations and photographs of Mackie’s work. There is some exposition explaining Mackie’s history and his inspiration for his designs but the book is primarily created as a photographic showpiece for his work. The interviews with stars are insightful and positive. This book will be a welcome and handsome addition to anyone’s coffee table. I give it four out of five stars.
