National Library Card Sign-up Month in September


Where can you go to access unlimited information and resources, all for the low cost of zero dollars?

The library, of course!

You may be asking yourself, “What’s so great about being a library card holder?” Think of a library card as a passport. A library card holder can access other places and times via print books. They can also get the most up to date, scholarly information from online databases, such as EBSCO Host, Learning Express, and the Encyclopedia Britannica. Library card holders have access not only to books and research materials. With a library card, you can access movies, music, magazines, tablets, game consoles, audiobooks, and more. Where else can you go that offers all that, for free?

September is National Library Card Sign-up Month. Every year, libraries across the nation work together with schools and nurseries to remind parents how important a library card is to their child’s growth and development. According to the American Library Association’s research, children who develop a love of reading early on perform better academically in years to come.

This year, representatives from each library branch in Lafourche Parish will be visiting elementary schools and day care centers near you bring library card applications to your child. In order to obtain a library card, all you need is a picture ID and a proof of residency. But you don’t have to wait for National Library Card Sign up month.
