We are only on the second month of 2023, but it will be a busy month here at LPPL. Aside from the holidays in February (Valentine’s Day and Mardi Gras), we are celebrating other special events as well. February is a month to celebrate those who contributed to our rich history (Black History Month), who love the library (Library Lover’s Month), who care about their teeth (Children’s Dental Health Month), love their pets (Responsible Pet Owner’s Month & Love Your Pet Day), and those who love to read magazines since our library resource of the month is Cloud Library Newsstand. With all this going on, our shortest month of the year is already shaping up to be a fun and busy one.
Valentine's Day
Ahh, love is the air and it sure is at LPPL. Our branches have tons of programs, crafts, and story times dedicated to all things Valentine’s Day. Some of these include in branch and take and make crafts that include multiple wreath workshops, door hangers, and bookmarks using the Cricut machine. Some branches will also be having Valentine Bingo and even making slime! Find more events here.
Mardi Gras
Laissez les bon temps rouler! Come pass a good time this Mardi Gras at LPPL. Despite being closed for Fat Tuesday, LPPL is celebrating Mardi Gras all month long. Aside from the Mardi Gras themed crafts and activities going on at all of our libraries, our most beloved events are our Mardi Gras parades. We have three parades going on this year: one in Thibodaux, one in Gheens, and one in Lockport. Thibodaux’s parade, the Krewe of Bookworms, and Gheens parade, Krewe du Gheens, are for all ages, while Lockport’s parade, the Krewe of Once Upon a Time is for preschool children ages 0-5. All three parades welcome costumes, decorated wagons or strollers, and walkers. For the safety of the children, motorized vehicles are not permitted. Participants must bring their own throws. See below for dates and times. Be sure to call the libraries if you have any questions or need more information.
Black History Month
We at LPPL recognize the contributions and legacy of the African American people during Black History Month. Most libraries in our parish will create displays to celebrate the month which can include library books and photos of local and global African American heroes. This year the Gheens Branch is hosting a program in which participants will come together as a community and complete a Stick Together puzzle promoting equality.
Library Lovers Month
Do you love the library? Well if you do, there is a whole month to celebrate you. We celebrate Library Lovers Month every February at LPPL, but this year we have something special going on. All you have to do is tell us why you are a library lover either on social media or in a library branch and you will be entered to win a LPPL swag prize at the end of the month. So be on the lookout for the social media post to comment on or the flyers in all LPPL branches for your chance to enter.
Children's Dental Health Month
Children’s Dental Health Month is sponsored by the American Dental Association and is celebrated every February. This year’s theme is “Brush, Floss, Smile” and the observance focuses on instilling good dental practices for children and their care givers. LPPL joins this initiative with dental health story time, crafts, and displays.
Responsible Pet Owners Month/Love Your Pet Day
Do you love your pet? Are you a responsible pet owner? If you are we are celebrating you during the month of February. LPPL has many programs, activities, displays, and crafts dedicated to our beloved pets so check out your local library to see how they are celebrating.
