The Lafourche Parish Library is always striving to be on the cutting edge of new technologies, media, and new genres in book writing (“genre-a particular style used in movies, writing, or art, which can be recognized by certain features,” http://www.macmillandictionary.com/us/dictionary/american/genre, Macmillan Dictionary online).
One of the newest and most popular genres to be introduced is called New Adult. New Adult (NA) fiction features main characters in the 18–30 age range and tends to focus on issues such as leaving home for the first time, developing sexuality and relationships, going to college, and career choices. While romance and relationships are the main focus in New Adult fiction, sub-genres commonly seen in young adult and adult fiction such as Science fiction, urban fiction, horror, paranormal, mystery, etc., can also be found.
New Adult fiction is growing in popularity particularly through books by bestselling authors like Jennifer L. Armentrout, E.L. James, Colleen Hoover, and Jamie McGuire. Titles like “Fifty shades of Gray,” “Beautiful Disaster,” “Losing it,” and “Slammed” are all examples of New Adult fiction. (Warning-intense sexuality is a hallmark of many New Adult books.)
Visit the New Adult section at any of LPPL’s nine branches for a new reading experience. If you don’t see an author or title you like, talk to any staff member to make a request or search Novelist Plus on the library website to find read-a-likes or books by your favorite authors.
