“And the winner is…”


Every year in January, the American Library Association bestows awards to outstanding books, videos, and other materials for children and teens. The Lafourche Parish Library is proud to include these award-winning titles in our Children’s and YA collections. These awards guide parents, educators, and librarians in selecting, recommending, and encouraging young readers to seek out quality materials

Here are some of the major awards bestowed in 2016:

  • John Newbery Medal - “Last stop on Market Street,” by Matt de la Pena. The Newbery Medal is “… awarded to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.” Check here for a complete list of Newbery Medal winners and Honor Books.

  • Randolph Caldecott Medal - “Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World's Most Famous Bear," illustrated by Sophie Blackall and written by Lindsay Mattick. The Caldecott Medal is “…awarded to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.” Check here for a complete list of Caldecott Medal winners and Honor Books.

  • Coretta Scott King Awards - “Gone Crazy in Alabama," by Rita Williams-Garcia. “Trombone Shorty," by Troy Andrews and Bill Taylor; illustrated by Bryan Collier (Illustrator award). The Coretta Scott King Awards go to “…outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values.” Check here for a complete list of Coretta Scott King award winners and Honor Books.

  • Michael L. Printz Award - “Bone Gap,” by Laura Ruby. The Michael L. Printz award “…honors the best book written for teens.”​ Check here for a complete list of Michael L. Printz award winners and honor books.

  • Pura Belpre’ Awards - “Enchanted Air: Two Cultures, Two Wings: A Memoir," by Margarita Engle. “Drum dream girl: how one girl's courage changed music,” by Margarita Engle; illustrations by Rafael López (Illustrator award). The Pura Belpre’ awards are given to “… a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms, and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth.” Check here for a complete list of Pura Belpre’ award winners and Honor Books.
