Library Lover’s Month

February is the month synonymous with love. There’s Valentine’s day, and here in the South, Mardi Gras (which is basically a celebration of a love of revelries). February is also Library Lover’s Month. Librarians often say “libraries are more than books”. What exactly does that mean? Sure, we have magazines, audiobooks, comic books, CDs, DVDs, and fun and education programs. But the library is also a sanctuary for those looking for solace, peace, and quiet. Where else can you go that allows you to access virtually all qualitative and quantitative knowledge, for free?

There are many ways to show your love of your library. You can contribute your time, money, or expertise to the library. The library may accept gifts of materials or monetary donations to purchase materials. Joining the Friends of the Library group is another way to show your love of your library. The Friends group is a volunteer group who assist in fundraising for the library. You can join as a single individual, a student, a senior citizen, a business or a family. We also offer a lifetime membership as well. Know someone interested in joining the Friends’ group? You can also give the gift of membership to friends and family.

Volunteerism is another way to contribute to your library. There are many libraries that are looking for an extra hand with programs and seminars, especially in the summer months during the Summer Reading Program. If that isn’t your thing, you can always volunteer to present a program at your local library. Maybe you’re an expert at jewelry making? Or perhaps duck decoy carving? The library would love you to present a program. Another way to help your library is to promote it. Many people are not aware of the great services we provide, all for free. Use the hashtag #LPPL on social media. Let others know of the great resources available at no cost to them!
