May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. Let’s get fit.

Who here made a New Year’s resolution to get fit?

Who has thus far not made any progress on that resolution? (Full disclosure: My hand’s raised.)

We’ve got loads to celebrate in May, from our moms to our pets (yes, it’s National Pet Month) to local police officers during National Police Week, May 15 to May 21. May is also National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. In May, we get a second chance to make good on those promises we made to ourselves way back in January.

The emphasis on physical fitness is in May, but every day, no matter the month, is another chance to improve our lives by taking on more physical activity like walking or riding a bike around our neighborhood, swimming, playing soccer with the kids in the backyard, whatever we enjoy.

The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition recommends that Americans spend at least 30 minutes daily engaged in physical activity for adults and 60 minutes for children, at least five days a week. Why is this important? The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition reports that about a third of American adults are obese and approximately 17 percent of American children and teens ages 2 to 19 are also – that’s 12.5 million children and teens.

Physical fitness doesn’t have to involve a treadmill.
