July is National Park and Recreation Month

2016 is the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service! And the month of July is National Park and Recreation Month!

To help celebrate this historic event, your Lafourche Parish Library is offering a variety of programming, storytimes and events in honor of these special places in America. Look for informative displays in our branches that highlight the wide-ranging collection of books, magazines, DVD’s and other items the library has available for loan that showcase our national parks. Our story time themes for July include: Picnics, Summer Camp Fun, Camping Jamboree, and Big Park, Little Park. We also have other events scheduled for all ages to join in the fun of celebrating this significant occasion. Check our July calendar for branch dates and times.

And remember, we have a national park in our own backyard--the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. The Wetlands Acadian Cultural Center, located in Thibodaux on St. Mary Street, is one of six parks in the state of Louisiana that comprise the Jean Lafitte National Park (it is also home to Headquarters for the Lafourche Parish Library System). Check out their website for unique programs and anniversary celebrations: .

From the National Park Service website, www.nationalparks.org, the Park Service (and the Lafourche Parish Library!) invites everyone to visit a national park, “In celebration of the upcoming National Park Service Centennial, the National Park Foundation and the National Park Service kicked off the Find Your Park movement to inspire all people to connect with, enjoy, and support America’s national parks. We invite those who already know and love the parks and also the next generation of visitors, supporters, and advocates to join the movement at FindYourPark.com…”
