The Back to School Special @ Your Local Library

Another school year is upon us, so what better time to remind you of a few of the wonderful resources provided to you free of charge from your local library. First, Homework Louisiana (HomeworkLA.org) is every student’s best friend. Once you log in with your library card and PIN, you can connect one-on-one with a live tutor who will help you with your work. Live tutoring is available for K– College, Sunday – Thursday from 2:00 – 10:00pm. Another feature is the SkillsCenter™ Resource Library, where there are worksheets, lessons, videos and more to assist with test prep and study and career resources: Adult Education and Career Center available Sunday – Thursday from 10:00am – 10:00pm.

Also, that first essay or research paper of the year is surely on its way so be sure to look at our resources for researching. There are too many great research options to list them all here, but you’ll find them on the Research and Learning link on our website, www.lafourche.org, but I can’t resist mentioning a few favorites:

  • Rosetta Stone – provides cutting edge interactive technology for learning other languages. Whether you need a foreign language to be eligible for TOPS or because you plan on visiting abroad, they have the databases to reach your language goals.

  • Biography Reference Center – is a comprehensive collection of more than 450,000 full text biographies, including the complete full text from Biography Today and Biography Magazine. So go ahead and pick a famous person to do your research paper on – we’ve got you covered!

  • TumbleBook Library – is specifically designed for elementary and middle school students with an online collection of ebooks, read-along chapter books, graphic novels, educational videos, and audio books to boost language skills.

  • 3M Cloud Library – is a great resource for your educational and recreational book needs. You will find digital books and audiobooks right from home. We have the best-sellers and the required classics; just download the app and start reading with your library card and PIN.

Once in our library, check out our Launchpads and Playaways. The Launchpads are hand-held learning game systems for all ages. There are math, language, social studies, and science games for preschoolers and elementary-aged, all the way to adult games to pass a good time or strengthen your mental acuity. The Playaway audio books also come in Bookpacks so you can follow along with the text as you listen to the story. It’s a great way to listen to the required readings and prepare for the test that you know is coming.

Of course it’s never too early to start thinking about study breaks either (only 69 days until fall break!) So keep your library card and PIN handy to check out movies, TV shows, music, video games, online magazines from Flipster, or all kinds of electronic resources that Hoopla provides. Of course there is no better way to unwind than with a good book, whether you like to hold and feel a “real” book or whether you like the convenience and privacy of an ebook. We have it all!

Here’s to another good school year. With the free Library and a little luck (and maybe a boost from Homework LA), it could be your best yet!
