By now you’ve heard about the results of the heavy rains we received two weeks ago. While our area was lucky to have merely been inconvenienced by the storms, farther north was a very different story. Included in that story are more than 140,000 homes flooded in the Greater Baton Rouge area alone, many in areas that had never seen flooding in recorded history, meaning that the residents were completely unprepared for the possibility.
If you want to help...
Since we are no strangers to the struggle that comes after a storm, it is only natural that many residents of Lafourche Parish have been wondering how we could help. While there are sure to be many opportunities that will open as the damage is assessed and the rebuilding gets under way, for now what is needed, and what your library would like to help you give, are basic supplies. Every branch of the Lafourche Parish Library is currently accepting donations of non-perishable and canned food and cleaning supplies, which we will send on to food banks in the affected areas, many of which had their warehouses just as underwater as the homes of the people they are trying to serve.
If you need help...
Many families and individuals have come to our parish after being displaced by the flooding. We are here to help you too. Faxing services for FEMA forms will be free through August 31. We are also issuing temporary library cards to out-of-town individuals that can be used for the next six months to access our collection. With this we hope we can help you find both practical information to help you get back on your feet and maybe a little fun to help the burdens feel a bit lighter.
We hope you all stay safe and dry.
