Are you bored? Are you looking for something to do? Do you need a hobby? Come to the library to beat those summer doldrums by starting a new hobby – genealogy research.
You may have heard interesting family stories from your parents or grandparents and often wondered who those family members were. When were they born? Where did they live? The library can set you on the path to those answers through accurate genealogy research.
A great place to start your search is with the Ancestry Library Edition database. All of the Lafourche Parish Public Libraries have this resource. It features helpful tools such as charts, summaries, calendars, message boards, and lots more.
Beginning genealogists can use this resource to start family trees or learn ways to access accurate historical records. You can also connect with other researchers and find answers to tough questions.
What do you need to access this wealth of genealogical information? You will need to use a library computer because remote access is unavailable. (The Thibodaux Branch requires you to use your library card to log on to a computer.)
The three main branches of the Lafourche parish library system, Thibodaux, Lockport, and South Lafourche, also have extensive collections of genealogical reference materials. These materials are not circulated (non-checkout) so they will be waiting for you to begin your journey into the past.
If you feel a bit timid about such a huge undertaking, book a librarian for a trained library staff member’s help. They can give you a brief orientation in getting started and show you the vast resources that the library has to offer.
