Summer Reading ... It's Not Just for Kids

As adults, we remember the days when, as kids, we looked forward to the end of the school year and summer vacation. Those were days of freedom at home where you could stay up late and sleep later than usual. It meant meeting your friends for bike rides and afternoon swims. It meant having to take a nap in the afternoon even if you didn’t want to, but you did because mama said you had to. Those were the times that we would read the library books that we had checked out from the bookmobile. It meant absorbing the pages and sharing the information that we found with our family and friends. Those summer days also meant that we joined the Summer Reading Program, because the librarians on the bookmobile were preparing us for our future and helping us to become the readers that we are today.

We always read the required amount of books and turned in our reading logs to the bookmobile librarians on their last trip of the summer. Once the next school year began, miraculously our Summer Reading Certificate would appear. What a simple way that was to while away the summer days.

Fast forward to the present, and I really mean fast forward. Did you know that you can relive your childhood reading experiences? By enrolling in the Summer Reading Program at any of the nine library branches in Lafourche Parish, you can go back (or fast reverse) to that childhood experience. The Summer Reading Program actually has a category for adult readers that many don’t know about. All that you have to do is to drop by your favorite branch and sign up for the Summer Reading Program. Our librarians will help you set your reading goal and inform you about the program and upcoming events.

Don’t let another summer pass you by without joining the Summer Reading Program at one of the nine branches of the Lafourche Parish Public Library System. Let our Program bring you back to your days of summer vacation!
