"Spooky" Stuff Happening @ Your Library

Mark your calendars.

There’s some seriously spooky stuff brewing at your library in October.

We’ve got pumpkins to paint, potions to brew, bashes to attend, and an all-around good, safe time to be had by all. Speaking of safe, October isn’t just for Halloween, which we’ll get to in a second.

It’s also for Fire Prevention Week, during which we anticipate visits from some very brave firefighters throughout Lafourche Parish.

FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

Fire Prevention Week is a national observance that the National Fire Protection Association has sponsored since 1922. This year, Fire Prevention Week is October 7 through October 13.

The aim is simple.

Fire kills and destroys…but not if it can be prevented.

This year’s campaign is “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere.” That’s good advice for people of all ages, but especially for younger children with limited knowledge and experience.

Each October, local firefighters take time out of their very busy schedules to visit our library branches to teach fire prevention and safety. Check out the schedule below and come out with the family to meet some of your local firefighters, learn some valuable info, and maybe have your photo taken with firefighters and their fire trucks.

It’s also a good time to say “thank you” to the firefighters you meet for the dangerous jobs they take on daily to keep our communities safe.

HALLOWEEN HAPPENINGS

OK, so there’s nothing “spooky” about our child-friendly Halloween events, but if you’re into Halloween, you’ll find much to enjoy at each of our library branches.

We’ve got some highly imaginative staff members at each of our library branches. Check out with they’ve got in store for you this October. (Just FYI, the below list is only a sampling of the myriad events we’ve got planned. Pick up a calendar at your home branch for more.)

The below programs are open to people of all ages. No registration is required to attend.

For those events during which Halloween costumes are welcome, costumes must be child-friendly (that is, they shouldn’t scare young children.)

  • Bayou Blue Branch: We’re also celebrating the 200th anniversary of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in October. Drop by the Bayou Blue Branch at 4 p.m. on October 25 to make spooky, green Frankenslime.

  • Choctaw Branch: Craft a spooky ghost windsock using tin cans and white streamers at 4:30 p.m. on October 25 at the Choctaw Branch.

  • Gheens Branch: Have a blast during the Gheens Branch’s Halloween bash at 4:30 p.m. on October 26. Don’t forget your costume.

  • Golden Meadow Branch: Visitors to the Golden Meadow branch are welcome to wear costumes and trick or treat at the library from 4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. on October 31. Get a goodie bag, while supplies last.

  • Larose Branch: Be safe this Halloween. Stop by the Larose Branch for safety tips and a free glow stick, while supplies last, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on October 30.

  • Lockport Branch: Need some spooky decorations for home? Make ghost lights using plastic cups and markers at 11 a.m. on October 27 at the Lockport Branch.

  • Raceland Branch: Don your Halloween costume throughout the day on October 26 at the Raceland Branch for entry into the library’s Halloween Costume contest. Prizes will be awarded.

  • South Lafourche Branch: Families are invited to the South Lafourche Branch’s annual Monster Mash Halloween Bash from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on October 24. The event features games and door prizes for children and food, while supplies last. Costumes are welcome, but not necessary to attend.

  • Thibodaux Branch: Wear your costume and trick or treat at the Thibodaux Branch throughout the day on October 31. Staff members will be giving out candy at the circulation, children’s, and reference desks.
