Veterans Day began as “Armistice Day” on the first anniversary of the end of World War I, November 11, 1919. In 1926, Congress passed a resolution to make it an annual observance, and in 1939, November 11 became a national holiday known as “Armistice Day.” President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of this holiday to Veterans Day in 1954. Another change occurred in 1968, when Veteran’s Day was moved to October, but in 1975 was returned to the historically significant date of November 11.
Veterans Day is a special day when we give our thanks and appreciation for all American veterans – living or dead. We especially recognize all living veterans in our own communities. Thank you for your personal sacrifices and abiding love of America. Thank you for your service to our nation.
