October is FINALLY here, and if you are an autumn-lover like me, then you know the season is long overdue. FIRE PREVENTION WEEK

Lafourche Parish Public Library is teaming up with the National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®)—the official sponsor of Fire Prevention Week for more than 90 years—to promote this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, “Not Every Hero Wears a Cape. Plan and Practice Your Escape!” We are educating everyone about the small but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe.

NATIONAL READING GROUP MONTH

October is National Reading Group Month! Reading groups, AKA book clubs, are proving that good books bring people together. National Reading Group Month salutes book clubs. It fosters their growth & promotes the love of literature. There's no better time than now to join one of our book clubs!

While our South Lafourche & Thibodaux branches already have book clubs (contact them for more details), many of our other branches are hoping to get a book club started! Check out our schedule of events below to see what we have planned.

  • Bayou Blue: Book Club Promotion - 10/01-10/31 Ever wanted to join a book club? We can help at the library! Book Club sign-up will be available throughout October.

  • Gheens: Book Out, Speak Out - 10/02 @ 11 AM Join us for the first installment of our new book club. At this meeting, we will discuss different genres of novels, & choose a specific book for the group to read. We will be meeting at the beginning of each month to discuss the chosen novel.

  • Golden Meadow: Book Club Interest Meeting - 10/18 @ 4 PM Celebrate Reading Group Month by attending our Book Club Interest Meeting! Share interests, ideas, & possibly create a new group! Light refreshments will be served.

  • Lockport: Book Club Social - 10/07 @ 2 PM It's Reading Club Month! Come to the Lockport Library for coffee, conversation, and an introduction to our new book club.

FRIENDS OF THE LIBRARY WEEK

If you are a library lover, we invite you to be our friend! Our libraries are celebrating our longstanding friends & inviting our patrons to join one of our groups this National Friends of the Libraries Week. You can join our Friends of the Library anytime throughout the year, but all of our branches are displaying information & registration forms this month. Each of our branches has their own Friends of the Library group, so contact your home branch to find out how you can join! You can learn more about our Friends groups here.

You may be asking yourself why you should join a Friends group. You would make a GREAT Friend if any of the following apply to you:

  • You love your library & want to give back.

  • You want to advocate for your library, telling the community about the numerous services & resources it provides.

  • You want to assist your library in raising funds to support library activities & services.

  • You want to volunteer your time at your library.

We hope to add YOU to our Friends list this October!

TeenTober is a new, nationwide celebration hosted by libraries every October and aims to celebrate teens, promote year-round teen services and the innovative ways teen services helps teens learn new skills, and fuel their passions in and outside the library.
