Giving Thanks at Your LPPLibrary in November!

As cooler weather comes in, our thoughts turn to our communities. Whether it is our families, our friends, the fans of our favorite team, or our community of library users, now is the time to gather together, and your Lafourche Parish Public Library wants to help you do that.

CHILD SAFETY AND PROTECTION MONTH

If November is a time for community, it is also a time to think about our community’s future through the safety of its youngest members. Check out your local branch where books and other materials about children’s safety and protection will be on display and available all month.

Native Americans have been and continue to be important to both our country as a whole and to happenings right here in Lafourche Parish. We are taking time this month to honor that. Displays about Native American heritage will be up in all branches. You can also check our Calendar to find out what events will be happening near you.

FAMILY LITERACY MONTH

The family that reads together stays together. All branches will be offering Family Literacy Bingo for kids ages 13 and under. Pick up a card and do activities to develop literacy skills. Then, turn in a completed card by Wednesday, November 27 to enter a prize drawing. Only turn in one entry per person, please. Other events can be discovered on our Calendar.

Games are a great way to bring people together, and your library has some great options for fun. Our Calendar can tell you when we will be breaking them out. We have events from bingo to broad games to pokeno. Remember, while we are making a special effort for Games Week, there’s a good chance that a branch near you hosts games on the regular, so be sure to look into it!

Lafourche Parish has a long and fascinating history, and many of our residents come from families that have lived here since before the United States existed. If you're interested in seeing just how far back your own family goes, our genealogy collections are a great place to start. If you can’t find what you are looking for there, we also offer access to Ancestry.com. From any computer in any of our branches, you can dive deep into a world-renowned collection of materials such as census and immigration records to help you on your search. Our communities are always moving forward, but it never hurts to have a better understanding of where we've been.

Kanopy is one of LPPL’s newest services. Our library community loves movies so much that we’re constantly considering where we will put the discs in our ever-growing collection! While we have no plans to ever stop bringing you the latest and greatest movies on disc, Kanopy is now also available to you. It offers streaming films, including hard-to-find indie and art house films, as well as documentaries, including the renowned Great Courses series, covering just about every subject you can think of.

DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME ENDS NOVEMBER 3

Don’t forget to turn your clocks an hour back on the first Sunday of this month. If you don’t you may find yourself running an hour early, but I’m sure you would rather get back the hour of sleep you lost back in spring!

Our communities would be much different places if not for the people who have bravely served in our country’s defense. In honor of our veterans, all branches will have special displays up and will be hosting events. Some events will be during the week leading up to the big day, so be sure to take a look at our Calendar to check the exact dates and times of events you may what to attend.

THANKSGIVING IS NOVEMBER 28

This month will be capped off with the holiday when our most important communities, our families, whether by birth or found, come together to remember how thankful we are for each other and all that we have. While all library branches will be closing at 4:00 on Wednesday, November 27 and staying closed until Monday, December 2, in order to give our staff time with their loved ones, we couldn’t let the holiday pass without doing something with the public. Displays relating to the holiday will be up all month. You can also check our Calendar to see what events we will be hosting near you!

We hope to see you at our libraries this November!
