Are You Ready for Some Mardi Gras (& More) @ Your LPPLibrary?


WOW! January 2020 is already over…and you know what that means. MARDI GRAS!! So make sure you know “where y'at” and “laissez les bons temps rouler” this February at your Lafourche Parish Library! Read on for other special events happening this fabulous February!

Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is officially on Tuesday, February 25th, but you know us bayou folk can’t celebrate for just one day. The Lafourche Parish Library krewes are ready to parade and share their throws with you at the Thibodaux, Lockport, and South Lafourche Branches. Preschool children are invited to take part in these annual Mardi Gras parades. Call the branch for more information.

Black History Month

Each February our country celebrates the achievements of African Americans and the significant roles they played in U.S. history. Join us at the library as we commemorate and pay tribute with select programming, displays, and activities geared towards acknowledging these achievements.

Bayou Blue Branch Library:

  • Test your knowledge at our Black History Month trivia contest

Choctaw Branch Library:

  • Visit the branch’s interactive display that includes special book covers featuring pictures of notable African Americans and biographical information. Brochures and timelines highlighting important historical moments will be available to patrons throughout the month of February.

Gheens Branch Library:

  • Black History Month Canvas Art (Ages 8-16): Celebrate Black History Month by emulating the works of African American artist, Alma Woodsey Thomas, using canvas

  • Black History Month Quilt (Ages 7-17): Celebrate Black History Month by creating a paper quilt that features important African Americans. Come and create a cool quilt while learning about these extraordinary individuals.

Thibodaux Branch Library:

  • The Thibodaux Library is hosting a children’s drawing contest for ages 6-12. Please submit your drawing depicting people or scenes from Black History. All drawings must be received by Tuesday, February 18th. Winner will be announced and awarded a prize on Friday, February 21st.

  • Display in library foyer featuring “African Americans and the Vote”

Valentine’s Day-February 14th

Help us spread the love at the library to celebrate one of the most special days of the year-Valentine’s Day. We have story time Valentines, crafty Valentines, Bingo Valentines, and so much more.

Children’s Dental Health Month

Did you know that the theme for the 2020 Children’s Dental Heath Month is “Fluoride in water prevents cavities. Get it from the tap!” The Lafourche Parish Library is playing our part in the month of February to promote the benefits of good oral health to children, their caregivers, teachers and many others. Join us in helping you have a perfect smile.

  • Choctaw Branch-Alphabet Teeth Cleaning: Learn tips for brushing and caring for your teeth while playing an alphabet game. Free toothbrushes will be given in recognition of Children’s Dental Health Month. Thursday, February 20, 4 PM

  • Gheens Branch-Tooth Fairy: Join us for story time to celebrate National Children’s Dental Health Month. This interactive story time about brushing and the tooth fairy will include creating a personal tooth fairy box to take home. Tuesday, February 18, 4:30 PM
