What's Happening: August 2021

BACK TO SCHOOL

August is here and that means Back to School! Parents, students, and educators are buzzing about in preparation. Here at Lafourche Parish Public Libraries, we just concluded Summer Experience 2021 and want to wish best of luck to everyone this new school year. As you’re shopping for school supplies and clothes, we encourage you to stop by the library to get the most valuable, free school supply of all—an LPPL library card. Too busy to come to the library? No problem! Visit our website at www.lafourche.org to apply for a library card. Your library card grants you access to fun, educational, and entertaining resources not just at the library but online also. While you’re visiting our website, we hope you’ll spend some time exploring all LPPL has to offer because as we say at LPPL, “We’re more than just books!”

RESOURCE OF THE MONTH: ANCESTRY

Each month, we choose a resource to spotlight. This month, we’ve chosen to spotlight Ancestry. Have you ever wondered about your ancestors? Have you ever wanted to start researching your family tree? Ancestry is an excellent place to start. First, you need to get a library card. Then, visit our website at www.lafourche.org. Hover on the Research and Learning Tab and click on Digital Library in the drop-down menu. Ancestry.com Library Edition is the first resource you’ll see. Clicking on the arrow will take you to the homepage. You’ll be able to search many historical records such as census, vitals, military, immigration, and many more. Don’t delay, begin your research today!

READ A ROMANCE MONTH & BOOK LOVERS' DAY

August is also Read-a-Romance Month, and our libraries have no shortage of romance books, movies, e-books, e-audiobooks, and audiobooks. I’m certain you will find a romance story you’ll truly enjoy. LPPL’s friendly staff are available to assist you in person, by phone, email, and/or chat. Our libraries are celebrating Read-a-Romance Month with displays, workshops, and a Read a Romance Book Challenge for adults & teens. Challenge participants are encouraged to read a romance for at least one of the prompts on the challenge. After reading your romance, check in at your local branch to receive an exclusive LPPL Romance Reader button. Romance Reader buttons are earned when participants read 1, 2, 5, 10, and 15 books. The challenge will run from August 1-August 31, 2021. The last day to collect buttons is Wednesday, 9/1. Adults are welcome to read YA books & teens are welcome to read adult books. If you’d like to be featured on our social media, bring a copy of the romances you read for the challenge when you check in at your branch, and we’ll snap a photo of you with your book.

In conjunction with Read-a-Romance Month, August 9th is Book Lovers’ Day. Our libraries are celebrating this day with displays and workshops. Some branches are making unique bookmarks, having book giveaways, and playing Bingo to win books. You can also celebrate Book Lovers’ Day by participating in our paperback exchanges. Every branch has one, and it’s always available.

SENIOR CITIZENS DAY

August 21st is Senior Citizens Day, and we love and appreciate our senior citizens at LPPL. Our Lockport Branch is celebrating senior citizens by throwing it back with a blast from the past themed trivia competition. All our branches have workshops and activities on a regular basis that senior citizens may enjoy. Some are: Bingo, Pokeno, Yoga, Board Games, Book Clubs, Line Dancing, Crafting, etc. The library is a great place for seniors to socialize and have fun. It’s also a great place for seniors to bring their grandkids and participate in activities designed for all ages.

Remember LPPL is more than just books, and we have an enormous supply of resources to educate, entertain, and enrich the communities we serve both online and in our branches. To gain access to our treasure trove of resources, the only thing you need to do is get a free library card and establish a PIN number. Already have a library card, but can’t remember your PIN number? No problem! Contact any of our nine branches and our friendly staff will be happy to help you. We look forward to seeing you at the library!
