What's Happening: August 2022

August is Back to School month! Parents, students, and educators are preparing for a new school year. Here at Lafourche Parish Public Libraries, we just wrapped up a “fin-tastic” Summer Experience. We were so excited to see so many children and their parents this summer. We want to wish best of luck to everyone this new school year. As you’re shopping for school supplies, we encourage you to stop by the library to get the most valuable, free school supply of all—an LPPL library card. Too busy to come to the library? No problem! Visit our website at www.lafourche.org to apply for a library card. Your library card grants you access to fun, educational, and entertaining resources not just at the library but online also. While you’re visiting our website, we hope you’ll spend some time exploring all LPPL has to offer because as we say at LPPL, “We’re more than just books!”

Students and instructors, we are here to help you succeed. Teachers, we know you are busy educating students and planning lessons, which is why we offer a book delivery service to educators! Need resources on a specific topic for an upcoming lesson? Contact us for a delivery! We will pull items for your students, deliver them to your classroom, and pick them up when they are due.

Students, when you need help with your homework, contact Homework Louisiana. You can connect with a live tutor 7 days a week from 2 PM-Midnight. Tutors are available for K-12, College, and Adult Learners in over 60 subject areas. There’s also test prep for the ACT/SAT, HiSet/GED, AP courses, and standardized tests.

Did you know we do field trips? Teachers, simply contact any of our branches to schedule a field trip for your class. You bring the students, we’ll plan the activities! Field trips can be scheduled for any time of the year, and can accommodate any age group. Our staff can also come out to your classroom to speak to your class about library resources, research, reading, and more! Contact any of our branches to schedule a visit to your classroom.

Students, if you have a project to do or a paper to write, check out our online databases. You get full and free access with your library card to World Book Online Encyclopedia, EBSCO databases, and Gale databases for all your research needs. Our branches are filled with print resources and staffed with librarians to answer questions and provide assistance.

We also have technology to help you succeed. All our branches have public computers and WiFi, and if you need to take the tech home, we have options for that too. We check out laptops, iPads, and hotspots so you can stay connected to the classroom wherever you are.

Want to check out a good book? Our libraries house thousands of books in various genres and subjects. We are sure to have something for everyone. We also have lots of digital options. Hoopla, cloudLibrary, ComicsPlus, Flipster, and NewsStand apps have tons of eBooks, eAudiobooks, graphic novels, and digital magazines, all available at no cost to you with your library card.

Each month, we choose a resource to spotlight. This month, we’ve chosen Novelist. Have you ever started reading a book that wasn’t worth the paper it was written on? That’s happened a few times to me too. Don’t waste your time on books you don’t like. Novelist is an excellent resource in our digital library that helps you find books matching your interests. To connect to Novelist, visit our website at www.lafourche.org. Hover on the Research and Learning Tab and click on Digital Library in the drop-down menu. Scroll until you see Novelist Plus under the Entertainment section. Clicking on the arrow will take you to the homepage. Create a free account and begin exploring. Discover new books & authors based on what you like to read. Read summaries & see the series order for titles. Special features include author read-alikes & book discussion guides. Don’t delay, find amazing books today!

Remember LPPL is more than just books, and we have an enormous supply of resources to educate, entertain, and enrich the communities we serve both online and in our branches. To gain access to our treasure trove of resources, the only thing you need to do is get a free library card and establish a PIN number. Already have a library card, but can’t remember your PIN number? No problem! Contact any of our seven branches and our friendly staff will be happy to help you. We look forward to seeing you at the library!
