What's Happening: December 2020

What a year 2020 has been! Kudos to you for making it through a year of uncertainty and mayhem. At LPPL, we continue to be thankful for our communities’ support of the library system. Even with COVID-19 (and all the other events 2020 has thrown at us), LPPL strives to provide a multitude of programs and services for our patrons. This December is no different. We are bringing Animal Tales & Lady Chops to you virtually this year to help you celebrate the season from home. Due to current restrictions, LPPL has ready-made craft packets, called Take & Makes, for you to work on too. Each week we have different holiday themed Take & Makes, so be sure to stop by our branches to pick up a packet.

Check the list below for special holiday programs in your community.

There are two types of people in this world: those who adore holiday music, and those who detest it. Either way, you should check out Freegal, a free and legal music download service available to you through your local library. Freegal offers access to about 15 million songs, including Sony Music’s catalog of legendary artists, and over 40,000 music videos. The total collection is comprised of music from over 40,000 labels with music that originates in over 100 countries. There is no software to download, and there are no digital rights management (DRM) restrictions. All you need is your Lafourche Parish Public Library card number and 4-digit PIN number.

If music isn’t your thing, that’s okay; the library has several other online subscription services for you to enjoy this holiday season. December is Learn a Foreign Language Month but it can be difficult to teach yourself a new language. Fret not, your library has you covered with Mango Languages, an immersive language learning software. Mango lessons involve a rich mix of listening and reading activities, so you can make sense of written and spoken contexts. It offers a simplified learning environment that presents content structure, review progress, and learning activities front and center, while streamlined navigation encourages users to explore different topics in your target language. Mango Languages also provides you with a personalized review experience that adapts to your progress and learning behaviors. All you need is an e-mail address and your library card to get started.

We’re updating our gaming collection at our 3 main branches in December by adding PlayStation 5 and XBOX Series X games. With the much anticipated launch of these two consoles, LPPL will have a selection of games for patrons to check out with their library cards. Video games may be checked out to any customer in good standing. Game(s) rated M for Mature require an adult library card and a valid ID stating customer is 17 years or older. Younger customers must have a parent and or guardian 17 years or older check out for them each time they wish to get an M (Mature) video game, unless the parent wishes to sign a waiver allowing their child/children to check out M (Mature) games without a parent present. Patrons can check out two games per card for two weeks, with one renewal per game.
