What's Happening: November 2020

It’s November! That means the year is entering its home stretch, the holidays are starting, and everything is getting so busy! Good thing your library is here for you, both in person and online.

We have a new and exciting addition to our children’s collections is month, Immersive Reality books. They are great for teaching kids about the world and making the information come alive for them. Each book comes packaged with a pair of goggles. When you look through them, you truly feel surrounded by the contents of the book. It is an astounding experience! Keep an eye out for them at every branch, packaged in hanging bags to make sure no one forgets the googles! This new collection operates under the same rules for lending as our normal children’s books. They are yours for three weeks, and they can be renewed once.

The holidays coming up are such an important family time. Wouldn’t it be great to dig up some family history to share? Ancestry.com has made itself free for our community to access at home through the end of the year. This database makes it easy to comb through birth, death, and marriage records, census information, and more. I once found my great-grandfather’s draft card from Word War I! Don’t forget that, if your roots run deep in the bayous, our Thibodaux, Lockport, and South Lafourche branches all have spectacular genealogy sections for follow-up research. You could be amazed by what you will find.

Schoolhouse Safari always brings such wonderful animal experiences to our libraries. Ever wonder what animals from around the globe eat for Thanksgiving dinner? Join our virtual feast to find out! On Tuesday, November 24 at 10:30 AM, “Thanksgiving Feast with Schoolhouse Safari” will premiere online and will stay available for one week. You will be able to watch it on our Facebook, YouTube, or at lafourche.org.

Now, more than ever, this is a time to think about yourself as part of a community, and we here at the Lafourche Parish Library are here to be your community resource.
