When Nora meets a group of high-powered women whose husbands' are supportive unlike her own, she discovers that the women use an unorthodox method of couples' therapy that has transformed their lives -- one that is worth killing for.
The generation of women who were raised being told they could have it all have learned that having it all and doing it all are two different things, but that they often go hand in hand. Yes, women can have it all, but in order to be anything and everything, they also have to do everything. Chandler Baker’s The Husbands focuses on the overworked wife and mother, but with surprise twist, which you’ll soon discover once you dive into this book about an exclusive Texas neighborhood and the successful women who live there.
Nora Spangler is living the life she always thought she wanted. She has a thriving career as an attorney, a beautiful daughter and another baby on the way, and a husband she loves. But Nora is at her limit. Every day, she is overtaxed, exhausted by the mounting pile of stuff she must get through just to keep her family running. When she and her husband look for a new home in the prestigious neighborhood Dynasty Ranch, she learns that the women there have success at work and help at home by way of their husbands who aren’t afraid to pitch in. As Nora considers purchasing a home in Dynasty Ranch, she grows closer to this group of women, hoping to learn their secrets and wishing that their attentive and accommodating husbands will rub off on her own. However, when Nora is asked to take on the case of a mysterious fire in the community that killed the husband of one of the group’s women, she begins to discover what’s really lurking behind the walls of Dynasty Ranch.
Chandler Baker’s The Husbands is an eye-opening, affirming account of the cost of being a woman trying to have it all in today’s busy world. What’s not to be expected is the measures the women of this novel take to make their dreams a reality. No spoilers here, but this isn’t your average power woman novel!
Baker tells an entertaining story as she introduces us and Nora to the women of Dynasty Ranch and lets us in on their seemingly perfect world. Nora is relatable in her struggle to juggle all the people and duties in her life, and is unassuming in her quest to discover how the Dynasty Ranch women manage to handle it all. Will you see what she doesn’t? Is everything as blissful in Dynasty Ranch as it seems?
I listened to an audiobook production of The Husbands, which I recommend. Narrator Allyson Ryan adopts a variety of voices and accents to bring to life the novels’ many characters, and reads at a smooth, even clip.
