Dione's Pick: Shadows by Kristen Proby

I’m starting to really believe that someone put a “gris-gris” on 2020. With voodoo on my mind, I picked up a new book by one of my go-to authors, Kristen Proby.

Shadows is set deep in the mystical French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana where voodoo reigns. As a bayou born Louisiana girl, I have visited New Orleans countless times. Nightly ghost tours are spooky; heck, even tours in the daytime are spooky in New Orleans. The tomb of Marie Laveau gave me goosebumps. If I’ve captured your interest, you have to read this book.

Shadows is the first book in Proby’s new series called Bayou Magic. This novel kicks off with powerful magic and horrific evil. Someone is killing women. Someone evil and depraved. It’s not until Brielle Landry sees a new shadow on her French Quarter ghost tour that she realizes something is wrong. Brielle sees dead people as shadows. It’s her power. Her two sisters also have been blessed, or some might say cursed, with magical powers too. The shadows don’t usually follow her or try to talk to her. This one does. In fact, this one becomes more than a shadow. Brielle realizes the shadow is a young woman who has been brutally tortured. As the days pass, more murdered women begin following Brielle asking for help.

Cash Winslow, an FBI profiler on a forced vacation, is visiting his brother in New Orleans. Cash takes Brielle’s tour and is smitten by her. The two keep running into each other and eventually start to date. When Cash embraces Brielle’s “gifts”, she knows he can help her find the killer. The two battle evil and wicked forces to try and save innocent lives.

Kristen Proby was spot on in her descriptions of both the French Quarter and the surrounding bayous. Supernatural powers and moss covered cypress swamps go hand in hand with south Louisiana. Shadows was a superb depiction of life in South Louisiana. I loved Brielle and Cash’s exploration of a relationship while dealing with supernatural things and evil people. Proby quotes real-life serial killers in this book and it’s just creepy. She gives the reader a glimpse into the mind of the killer, and it was not a place I wanted to be. I read this book in one sitting, because I had to know the ending. This was a perfect start to a series. I can’t wait until the next book comes out. If you are looking for a paranormal thriller with a little romance thrown in, give this book a shot, you won’t be disappointed.

Shadows is available in regular book format at your library. Happy Reading!
